Getting Started

  • Am I eligible for a UCSD Google Account?
    • Faculty, staff, postdocs and certain visitors are eligible for a UCSD Google account. If you attempted to activate your UCSD Google account and received an error, please contact the Scripps IT Helpdesk. 
  • How do I sign in to my UCSD Google Account? 
  • I already have a personal Google Account, what is the difference between personal and UCSD Google accounts?
    • UCSD Google account is part of Google's G Suites for Educations.  It offers enhanced features such as unlimited drive storage, Team Drive, shared calendars and resources.  See these links for more details about G Suites for Education. 
    • If you have signed up for a personal Google account using your UCSD email address in the past, that account is completely separate from the UCSD Google account.  You will be prompted to choose which account to login (organizational or personal).  


  • Can I keep using Mail/Outlook/Thunderbird with UCSD Google?  
    • Yes. You can add the Google account into your email software.  Depending on your email software, you may have the option to simply add a Google account, then sign in with your UCSD Google account.  If you don't see the Google option when adding an account, use these settings to add a IMAP account.    
  • How do I migrate my current UCSD Emails to UCSD Google? 
    • The migration process is done by the campus email team.  The Scripps IT Helpdesk is actively scheduling email migrations with the email team.  
  • How do I setup my mail client (Mac Mail, Thunderbird, Outlook, iPhone, Android)? 
    • Navigate here to see the process for the different mail clients. 


  • How do I request a resource calendar (e.g., for scheduling a meeting room, shared vehicle, or vessel)?
    • Contact the Scripps IT Help Desk ( with a brief description of the resource, and who should have editing and/or view to the calendar.


  • How do I get started with Google Drive?
    • There are several ways to use Google Drive.  You can use it on the web, sync files to your computer, and access your Google Drive from your mobile devices.  Here is a tutorial to get started with Google Drive.   
  • How do I share files on Google Drive
    • You can share files via Google Drive on the web.  Click for more.  
  • What is Team Drive?
    • Google Team Drives are shared spaces where teams can easily store, search, and access their files anywhere, from any device.  Unlike files in My Drive, files in Team Drive belong to the team instead of an individual. Even if members leave, the files stay exactly where they are so your team can continue to share information and get work done.  Used in conjunction with Google Groups, it provides an easier way to provision access to Team Drive.  Here's a Team Drive tutorial.  To access your Team Drive files from your computer's file explorer, try Google File Stream


  • Google Groups can be used as a mailing list and/or as a discussion forum.  It also provides a way to manage sharing for group members in Google Drive.  
  • How do I request a Google Group?
    • Contact the Helpdesk ( with a brief description of the group and names of the owner/managers.
